Zakiya Johnson
Zakiya Johnson(BFA) is a multimaterial movement artivist and process enthusiast! Born in Nassau, Bahamas, she acquired her formal and informal training in ballet (RAD), contemporary and street dances of the diaspora including Junkanoo. Now she focuses on utilizing somatic practices, in afro contemporary forms. In addition to her dance career, She plans community events, is a social activist, and Assistant graphic designer for The Nest. She is a co-founder and director of the Pachanga Collective, and a company member of Methods of Madness Dance Theater. Dancing at the intersection of afro and contemporary aesthetics, she draws inspiration in both her performance and visual creations from her identity as a multiracial woman, growing up within a multifaceted environment.
